Preparation for travelling to Dubai / Singapore

Things Required before travelling to SP Jain, Dubai / Singapore

Apart from instruction given by SP Jain in their mail(s), here are some few things I thought would be useful to carry before flying to Dubai / Singapore Campus.

1. Microwave Utensils (Do not have gas stoves in any of the campus) – Plate, Cup, spoon and bowl.

2. Small packet of detergent (For initial few days) – Singy students need to collect token (2 min – each for washing and drying) from reception from Eda.

3. Hard Disk (Min 80 GB) & Pen-Drive (4GB) – College lectures are recorded and u can take it from IT dept (Mr Sreekumar or Sujit – Dubai / Mr. Mohan Kulkarni – Singapore). Lectures are helpful in preparing for final exams of college.

4. Mouse – for LAN games / in case, Laptop’s mouse stops working.

5. Maggi’s Masala for Singy students (and not the whole Maggie Packet) – Except Mustafa, u won’t find the Indian Masala Maggie anywhere in Singy and even Mustafa has shortages of the same. Because of late night assignments, Maggie is the only life savor, so carry it.

6. Calculator – Normal Engg calc is preferred as they are allowed in all closed book exams (though in 90% of exams, it will be open laptop). Financial calc may or may not be allowed though they are more useful for finance papers.

7. About Laptop – Ensure that they are virus free. There have been instances where they have gone bad in between the course and students have lost all their useful files (hence, it is preferable to keep a back up of files in a separate hard-disk).

8. Flat Pin Chargers (min 2) – Indian (round Pin) chargers won’t fit into the electrical slots in Singy or Dubai. One needs to carry (at least two) multi flat pin chargers for the same.

9. Passport size photo (min 12) with white background (not older than 3 months).

10. Stationary - Pen, Register (at least 3), Pencil, scale, key-ring etc. (Little costly to buy the same in both cities). Avoid buying / carrying any subject books. U will get loads of it (at least 50-60 books) in both Singapore and Dubai.

11. Sim-Card – In Dubai, they are available at airports, only require your passport and visa copy (May be photo also). Du (more preferable) and Etisalat are service providers. In Singy, u can buy Singtel Sim from 7-11 (Near McDonalds – 15 min walking distance from college campus). Ensure u carry your original passport as shopkeeper will scan it in order to give u the sim. Also, buy the bus / Metro card from the same place. It works in all sort of public transport vehicles.

12. Food – People arriving in Dubai and Singy may arrive a little late (in the night). Hence, it is advisable to carry home cooked food in check in luggage (as Singy canteen closes by 10 PM in night, though Dubai is food joint near college hostel which are open late).

13. Grocery – In Dubai, you will get all India stuff. In Singy, u will get Indian stuff only at Mustafa, Little India.

14. Currency Card – Though most of students get it in advance, you can still manage cash from your International Debit Card. Ensure you withdraw in bulk (like 500 SGD or 1000 AED etc) at any ATM. But do carry hard currency which u will require at airport to buy sim, food etc.

15. Medicines – For body pain, cough, cold, stomach ache etc. Do carry prescription in your hand luggage. You may be asked to show it at airport.

16. Camera – Especially useful when the subject is over in college and beloved visiting prof is leaving the campus.….. J

17. Umbrella – For Singy, it is good to have as weather is rainy through the year. For Dubai, u may need it when the heat starts in the early part of June-July.
